One dawn, as the boy carried nets to the canoe, the water near the reef darkened. The shark spirit rose once more, its fin glistening in the rising sun. It spoke with thunder in its voice. “Fisherman, the time has come. Give me what you owe.”
The fisherman fell to his knees and cried, “Great spirit, forgive me! He is my only son. Take anything else, but spare him.”
The shark spirit’s eyes flashed. “You broke your word. You fed your family with my gift and grew fat with my blessing, but you deny me my due. Such betrayal cannot pass.”
Before the fisherman could shield his son, the shark spirit surged forward. The sea roared as waves rose high, pulling the boy beneath. The fisherman’s screams echoed across the shore, but the ocean swallowed them whole.
From that day, the fisherman’s nets came up empty. His canoe drifted idle, his family fell into sorrow, and the sea that once gave him life now carried only grief. Among the islands, mothers warned their children: never break a promise made to the ocean, for the spirits of the deep remember every word.
