The Hyena’s Secret

How the clever Hyena kept the forest on edge with a secret no one dared reveal

Cunning hyena under moonlight Tsonga folklore Mozambique

In a quiet corner of the forest near the Limpopo River, where the trees whispered to each other and the wind carried the scent of the wild, there lived a hyena unlike any other. His name was Nhova, and everyone in the forest knew him as the cleverest trickster. But Nhova carried a secret so powerful that even the proud lions and cunning jackals avoided speaking about it.

It all began one scorching afternoon when the sun hung high, pressing the river into a thin silver ribbon. Nhova was prowling near the watering hole, pretending to drink, while watching a group of monkeys chatter and swing from branch to branch. Though they looked playful, Nhova knew they had hidden nuts that belonged to the forest elders. He wanted them, but not through force. Nhova had learned long ago that the forest respected wit more than strength.

As Nhova waited, the monkeys noticed his sly grin. “What are you up to, Nhova?” one of them called, swinging closer. But Nhova merely laughed, a low, rumbling sound that made even the birds pause mid-flight. “Oh, nothing at all. Just enjoying the sun,” he said. Yet behind that grin, he was planning.

Later that evening, Nhova visited his closest friend, the old tortoise, Mbilu. “Mbilu,” he whispered, “do you know why the forest has never caught me in my tricks?” Mbilu, slow and wise, raised a wrinkled eye. “Perhaps it is because the forest animals are too proud, or maybe it is because you always speak the truth in part.” Nhova chuckled. “No, Mbilu. It is my secret.”

Curiosity filled Mbilu, but he only nodded. “The forest is full of secrets, Nhova. Some should never be revealed.”

Nhova, however, could not resist. He decided that tonight, under the cover of moonlight, he would reveal his secret to one brave creature. He chose a young hare named Langa, known for her curiosity and quick thinking.

“Langa,” Nhova called softly, as he emerged from the shadows, “follow me. I will show you something no other creature knows.” Langa’s ears twitched with excitement and fear. She followed silently, careful not to alert the lurking snakes or prowling leopards.

They reached the heart of the forest, where a small pond reflected the moon like a mirror. Nhova crouched beside it. “Look closely,” he said. “Do you see your reflection?” Langa nodded. “That is not all. Every creature has something hidden within themselves, something that can change the balance of the forest. My secret is that I can see it. I can see what lies in the hearts of all animals.”

Langa gasped. “You mean… you know what every animal wants?” Nhova grinned wider. “Exactly. And because I know, I can trick, negotiate, and survive where others fail. That is why even the lions dare not challenge me.”

But Nhova had another warning. “This secret is not for every ear. If you speak of it, the forest will turn against you. You must guard it as I do.”

Days passed, and Langa could not resist the temptation to test Nhova’s words. She whispered to her friends, asking what Nhova truly knew. Soon, the animals began to notice small hints, little truths Nhova had revealed that no one else could have guessed. A bird realized Nhova had seen its hidden nest. A monkey found his nuts mysteriously gone, knowing Nhova had known their exact location. The forest began to murmur with awe and fear.

Nhova’s secret, once confined to a single hare, had started to weave its way into every shadow, every tree, and every whisper of the wind. Yet, Nhova remained unseen, always a step ahead. Langa, though young, understood the gravity of the secret and returned to Mbilu, seeking advice.

“Mbilu, Nhova’s secret is too dangerous,” she said. “The forest is changing. Animals are suspicious of each other.” Mbilu, calm and patient, nodded. “That is the nature of secrets, child. Some reveal themselves in time, whether you wish them to or not. The wise guard their hearts more than the truth itself.”

One evening, as the sun dipped behind the hills, Nhova gathered the animals. His laughter echoed across the clearing. “I see you all,” he said. “I see the fear, the greed, the curiosity. That is my gift and my burden. Use what you know wisely, or the forest will teach you through hardship.”

From that day, the animals learned to watch their actions, knowing Nhova’s eyes could be anywhere. And though they never knew the full depth of his secret, they respected him, not only for his cleverness but also for his restraint. Nhova had shown them that power lies not only in what one knows but also in how wisely one wields it.
