Koffi journeys through the forest after being sent away to find a replacement clay pot.

Koffi had grown up without the protection of his mother. After her death, he remained in the household of his father and stepmother, where life was far from peaceful. His stepmother treated him harshly, giving up him difficult chores and finding reasons to punish him. Koffi endured the treatment quietly, hoping that one day his life would become easier.

One day, while carrying out one of his household duties, Koffi accidentally broke his stepmother’s clay pot. The accident was enough to make her furious. She had already been looking for an excuse to send him away, and now she believed she had found one.

She pointed at the broken pieces and ordered Koffi to leave the house. He was not to return until he had found another clay pot exactly like the one he had broken.

Koffi stood silently for a moment. The demand seemed impossible. He did not know where he could find such a pot, and he had no money with which to buy one. Yet the thought of remaining in the house filled him with even greater sadness.

So he left.

As Koffi walked farther from home, something unexpected happened. For the first time in years, he felt free. Behind him were the insults, punishments and endless chores. Ahead of him was uncertainty, but at least the road offered the possibility of a different life.

He travelled through unfamiliar places, meeting people and encountering creatures he had never seen so closely before. Eventually, his journey brought him to the edge of a great river.

It was evening.

The light was fading, and the sounds of the forest were beginning to change. Koffi had no idea where he would sleep or where he would find the pot he had been ordered to bring home.

Then he encountered a crocodile.

The enormous creature frightened him at first. It opened its powerful jaws and asked how a human child had managed to reach such a lonely place.

Koffi did not run.

Instead, he explained his story. He told the crocodile that he was an orphan, that his stepmother had driven him away after he accidentally broke her clay pot, and that he had been ordered to return with another one.

The crocodile listened.

Instead of attacking him, the creature felt sympathy for the boy.

The crocodile had been preparing to bathe and offered Koffi a strange bargain. If Koffi would help him clean his back, he would help the boy find the thing he needed.

Koffi accepted.

The task was frightening because the crocodile’s back was rough and covered with hard scales. Yet Koffi did not complain. He climbed onto the creature and carefully scrubbed its back.

He continued even when the work became painful.

The crocodile noticed his courage and patience.

When Koffi had finished, the creature kept its promise.

But the journey was not over.

Koffi soon encountered other extraordinary beings. Among them was a terrifying monster. Once again, fear could have caused him to turn back, but he remembered why he had left home.

He needed the clay pot.

He also understood that the strange people and creatures he encountered might know something about his destination.

Koffi remained respectful.

He did not insult those he met.

He did not demand that they help him.

Instead, he explained his situation and accepted whatever difficult tasks were placed before him.

His journey eventually brought him into contact with the Devil.

The encounter could have ended badly for another traveller, but Koffi’s manner was different. He did not approach the strange being with arrogance. He remained humble and explained that he was only searching for a replacement for the clay pot he had broken.

His courage impressed those he met.

Koffi was discovering something important without realizing it: the journey was no longer only about finding a pot. Every difficulty was testing his character.

At one point, his journey led him to a remarkable settlement inhabited by elderly women.

The women were not ordinary villagers. Their appearance and surroundings made it clear that Koffi had entered another world.

They were old and needed assistance.

Koffi could have ignored them.

After everything he had endured, he might have decided that he had enough problems of his own.

Instead, he helped them.

He cleaned their fingernails.

He washed them.

He helped them prepare themselves.

He treated them with patience and respect.

The women were delighted by his behaviour.

They had encountered many people, but Koffi was different. He did not help them because he expected an immediate reward. He helped because they needed assistance.

The oldest woman recognized the goodness in him.

She decided that his trials should come to an end.

She gave Koffi magical gourds and explained how they were to be used. She also showed him how he would finally obtain the clay pot his stepmother had demanded.

Koffi accepted the gifts carefully.

The boy who had left home with nothing now possessed something extraordinary.

But he did not forget the people who had helped him.

He continued his journey until the moment came for him to return.

When Koffi finally arrived home, he carried the clay pot that his stepmother had demanded.

But his return was unlike anything she had expected.

Koffi had changed.

His journey had taken him through places of danger and wonder. He had faced frightening creatures, helped strangers and elderly women, and received magical gifts because of his good conduct.

Then came the moment that transformed his life completely.

Koffi used the first magical gourd according to the instructions he had received.

Suddenly, magnificent golden castles began rising from the ground.

One after another, they appeared across the landscape.

The sight was beyond anything Koffi had imagined.

The second gourd produced people, wealth, women and children to populate the new kingdom.

Koffi, once the mistreated orphan who had been sent away from his home, had become a king.

His suffering had been transformed into prosperity.

His stepmother could hardly believe what she saw.

Instead of being happy for Koffi, however, jealousy began to grow inside her.

She could not accept that the boy she had mistreated had returned with greater wealth and honour than her own children.

She wanted the same fortune for her son.

So she sent her eldest son along the same road.

She believed that if Koffi had returned wealthy after such a journey, her own son could do even better.

But there was one important difference.

Koffi had travelled with humility.

His stepbrother travelled with arrogance.

Where Koffi had helped the strange beings and elderly women he encountered, the other boy treated them with disrespect.

Where Koffi had listened patiently, his stepbrother complained.

Where Koffi had served others, his stepbrother demanded that others serve him.

He believed that the rewards were waiting for him simply because he had followed the same road.

But the journey was not merely a road to wealth.

It was a test of character.

The same encounters that had helped Koffi became difficult for his stepbrother because he refused to show the kindness and humility that Koffi had shown.

He wanted the reward without accepting the responsibilities that came before it.

Eventually, he returned without the fortune he had expected.

The difference between the two journeys was clear.

Koffi had left home with nothing but his determination.

He had returned with wealth, honour and a kingdom.

His stepbrother had left home expecting wealth.

He returned disappointed.

The experience showed that the magical rewards were not simply gifts for completing a journey. They were rewards for the qualities Koffi demonstrated along the way.

Koffi had been patient when he was afraid.

He had remained respectful when he was vulnerable.

He had helped others even when he himself needed help.

Most importantly, he had not allowed the cruelty he experienced at home to turn him into a cruel person.

His stepmother had treated him unfairly, yet Koffi did not respond to every stranger with anger.

Instead, he continued to show kindness.

That kindness opened doors that strength alone could never have opened.

The clay pot that began the journey therefore became much more than an ordinary household object.

Its destruction forced Koffi away from a painful home.

The journey that followed exposed him to danger, but it also introduced him to people and beings who recognized his character.

What appeared to be a punishment became the beginning of his transformation.

Koffi had once believed that leaving home meant losing everything.

Instead, he discovered a life greater than the one he had known.

His story also revealed the danger of jealousy.

His stepmother saw Koffi’s fortune and wanted the same reward for her own child. But she did not understand that copying the journey was not enough.

The stepbrother could follow the same road and meet the same characters, yet he could not receive the same reward because he did not possess the same character.

The story therefore reminds us that fortune cannot always be copied.

A person may imitate another’s actions without possessing the qualities that made those actions successful.

Koffi’s journey was shaped by humility, patience and kindness.

His stepbrother’s journey was shaped by entitlement.

That difference determined their destinies.

In the end, the boy who had been rejected by his stepmother became a king.

The broken clay pot that had once represented punishment became the beginning of an extraordinary adventure.

And Koffi’s greatest reward was not simply the golden castles or the wealth that came from the magical gourds.

It was the transformation of his life.

He had gone into the world as a lonely orphan with nothing.

He returned with a kingdom, a future and the knowledge that kindness could succeed where bitterness would have failed.

His journey showed that hardship does not always have the final word.

Sometimes, the road that begins with rejection can lead to unexpected greatness.
