At first, their rivalry remained distant. They did not immediately meet to fight. Instead, their names travelled from one community to another through conversations and stories. People compared them. Who was stronger? Who was braver? Who possessed greater power? Who could overcome the other if they ever met?
Such questions may seem harmless when people ask them around a fire, but rivalry can become dangerous when the people being compared begin to believe the praise.
Angonzing heard that Ndongmba considered himself stronger than him. Ndongmba heard that Angonzing believed no one could challenge his power. Each man became increasingly determined to prove the other wrong.
Eventually, the distance between their reputations could no longer protect them from one another.
When Angonzing and Ndongmba finally came face to face, neither greeted the other as a friend. They stood looking at each other, each measuring the strength of the man before him. There was no need for a long explanation. Their names had already spoken for them.
Angonzing was the first to make his challenge clear.
He would not accept that Ndongmba was more powerful than he was.
Ndongmba answered with the same confidence. He had no intention of allowing Angonzing to place himself above him.
The challenge that had existed only in words now became real.
Neither man wanted to step away.

It endured because their struggle demonstrated what can happen when two people become so determined to prove themselves that they forget the consequences of their actions.
Neither man’s reputation could erase the lesson.
A person who constantly seeks to prove that he is stronger will eventually encounter someone who refuses to be intimidated. A person who believes that every challenge must be answered may find himself drawn into conflicts that could have been avoided.
