About Folktales.africa
It is all about African Folktales
Folktales.africa is a growing digital archive of African storytelling — preserving the voices, wisdom, and imagination of generations past for the audiences of today and tomorrow. Our mission is to collect, curate, and retell traditional African folktales from every corner of the continent.
From the deserts of North Africa to the forests of Central Africa, from island nations to inland villages, every region has stories worth remembering. These stories often carry deep moral lessons, cultural values, and vivid characters — like the clever tortoise, the wise elder, or the cunning hyena — passed down through oral tradition for centuries.

What We Do
- Collect and curate folktales from across all African countries and cultures.
- Retell each story in modern, accessible language while preserving its cultural authenticity.
- Credit the origins and storytellers, highlighting the regions and communities each tale comes from.
- Add moral lessons, questions, and answers to each tale — making them useful for classrooms, parents, and cultural education.
- Create evergreen multimedia content, including narrated videos and children’s performances that bring the stories to life.
Why It Matters
Oral storytelling in Africa has always been a tool for teaching, remembering history, and building community. At Folktales.africa, we believe these stories should not be lost — they should be celebrated, studied, and shared widely, both online and offline.
Whether you’re a researcher, a teacher, a parent, or simply curious, Folktales.africa is your doorway into the soul of African storytelling.
