Long ago, in a small coastal community in the Seychelles, there lived a fisherman with his wife and their many children. They were a large family, but they had very little. Their home was simple, and finding enough food for everyone was a daily struggle.
The fisherman worked hard.
Every morning, he went down to the shore, pushed his little boat into the water and sailed out in search of fish. He would remain at sea for hours, hoping that the day’s catch would be enough to feed his family.
But the sea did not always reward his efforts.
For one entire week, he cast his line again and again without catching anything. His family waited at home with empty stomachs while he returned each evening with nothing.
At the beginning of the following week, the fisherman decided that he could no longer continue fishing in the same waters.
“I will go farther today,” he told himself. “Perhaps I will find fish somewhere else.”
He climbed into his small boat and paddled farther than he had ever gone before.

Eventually, he reached an area of the sea known to fishermen as Lilo.
The water was calm.
The fisherman cast his line and waited.
Hours passed.
Still, nothing happened.
He remained there until late in the afternoon. Then suddenly, he felt a powerful pull.
His fishing line had become heavy.
He tightened his grip and began pulling.
Instead of a fish, something strange appeared beneath the surface.
It was Renn Mer, the mysterious Queen of the Sea.
The fisherman was startled.
He raised his paddle, intending to strike her.
But before he could do anything, the Queen spoke.
“Before you hurt me, lift your eyes and remember God.”
The fisherman lowered his paddle.
The Queen then told him that she would give him something that would change his life.
She gave him a magical goat.
“This goat will provide you with everything you need,” she explained. “When you return home, say the words I teach you, and the goat will produce whatever you ask for.”
The fisherman could hardly believe what he was hearing.
The Queen gave him the special words he needed to command the goat.
He thanked her and returned to shore.
For the first time in many days, he went home with hope in his heart.
When he arrived, his children gathered around him.
They expected him to have brought fish.
Instead, they saw the strange goat.
The fisherman placed it before his family and told them that it was a gift from Renn Mer.
Then he spoke the magical words.
Almost immediately, the goat began producing everything the family needed.
The children stared in amazement.
Their mother could hardly believe her eyes.
For the first time in years, the family had enough.
The fisherman no longer needed to spend every day struggling to catch fish simply to keep his children alive.
But there was one person who quickly noticed the family’s sudden change in fortune.
A neighbour had been watching.
The neighbour had a close relationship with the fisherman and knew that something unusual must have happened.
One day, the neighbour approached him and pretended to be concerned.
“You look tired,” the neighbour said. “You have spent so many days at sea. Come and eat something at my house.”
The fisherman accepted the invitation.
He carried his goat with him.
As they approached the neighbour’s home, the neighbour offered him food and encouraged him to rest.
The fisherman was exhausted.
He eventually fell asleep.
The neighbour immediately revealed his true intentions.
He told a young girl in the house to take the fisherman’s magical goat and replace it with an ordinary goat.
The girl obeyed.
When morning came, the fisherman took the goat home without realising that it was no longer the magical one.
He gathered his children around him.
Then he repeated the magical words.
Nothing happened.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
The goat remained ordinary.
The fisherman was confused.
He immediately understood that something had gone wrong.
He returned to the Queen of the Sea.
When he reached Lilo, he called for Renn Mer.
When she appeared, he told her what had happened.
The Queen listened and gave him another magical object.
This time, she gave him a small snuffbox.
She explained that when he returned home, he should speak the special words and ask the object to provide whatever he needed.
The fisherman thanked her and returned home.
Once again, his fortunes changed.
He used the magical snuffbox and obtained everything his family needed.
But the neighbour was watching.
He had not forgotten the first magical gift.
He suspected that the fisherman had received something else from the sea.
So he repeated his trick.
He invited the fisherman to his home, offered him food and waited until he fell asleep.
Then he secretly exchanged the magical snuffbox for an ordinary one.
The fisherman returned home unaware of what had happened.
He gathered his children and proudly produced the second gift.
He spoke the magical words.
Instead of producing the things the family needed, the ordinary snuffbox did nothing.
The fisherman was devastated.
He had lost another gift.
He began to suspect that someone close to him was responsible.
But he did not yet know who.
Once again, he returned to the sea.
He travelled to Lilo and called for Renn Mer.
The Queen appeared.
The fisherman explained everything.
Renn Mer looked at him and told him that this would be the final time she helped him.
She gave him a third object.
It was a magical whip.
“This is different from the other gifts,” she told him. “When you return home, speak the words I give you. But this time, the object will do more than provide for your family.”
The fisherman accepted the whip.
He thanked the Queen and returned to shore.
But the neighbour was waiting.
Once again, he approached the fisherman.
He pretended to be concerned about his hunger and invited him home.
The fisherman was cautious.
He had already lost two gifts.
Still, he was tired and hungry.
He accepted the invitation.
After they reached the neighbour’s house, the neighbour offered him food.
He waited until the fisherman became sleepy.
But this time, the fisherman did not allow the neighbour to take the whip.
He kept it close beside him.
The neighbour became frustrated.
He instructed the young girl in his house to steal it while the fisherman slept.
She waited.
Eventually, the fisherman fell asleep.
The girl reached for the whip.
The moment she touched it, the magical object struck her.
She cried out.
The neighbour rushed over.
“What’s happening?” he asked.
“The whip is beating me!” the girl cried.
The neighbour tried to take it himself.
The moment he grabbed it, the whip struck him too.
He screamed.
He tried to escape.
But the whip followed him.
The neighbour finally realised that the fisherman had been given a magical object that could expose the person responsible for stealing the earlier gifts.
He begged for mercy.
He admitted everything.
He confessed that he had stolen the goat and the snuffbox and replaced both with ordinary objects.
He promised to return everything.
The fisherman ordered the magical whip to stop.
The neighbour returned the stolen gifts.
The fisherman gathered his goat, his snuffbox and his whip.
Then he returned home.
His family had been waiting anxiously for him.
When he arrived, he placed the magical goat before them.
He spoke the Queen’s words.
At once, the goat began providing everything the family needed.
The fisherman then used the snuffbox.
Once again, the family had abundance.
The children were delighted.
Their mother was relieved.
The fisherman had finally escaped the poverty that had troubled them for so long.
But he had also learned something important.
His greatest danger had not come from the sea.
It had come from someone who lived nearby and pretended to be his friend.
The neighbour had watched his good fortune and wanted it for himself.
Instead of asking for help, he chose theft.
Instead of being grateful for what he had, he wanted what belonged to another person.
His greed had eventually exposed him.
The fisherman, however, had also learned a lesson about secrecy.
He had been so excited by his sudden fortune that he allowed others to discover the source of it.
The magical objects had brought him wealth, but they also attracted attention.
From that time onward, the fisherman and his family lived comfortably.
They no longer had to worry about going hungry.
The children grew up with food and security.
The fisherman never forgot Renn Mer.
Whenever he looked toward the sea, he remembered the strange encounter that had transformed his life.
He remembered the moment he had nearly attacked the Queen.
Had he struck her, he might never have received anything.
Instead, he listened.
He lowered his weapon.
He showed restraint.
That single decision changed everything.
The story therefore became more than a tale about magical objects.
It became a story about how fortune can arrive unexpectedly, how greed can destroy trust and how kindness and restraint can open doors that violence would have closed.
The fisherman had entered the sea as a desperate man with nothing.
He returned with gifts that could provide everything his family needed.
His neighbour saw only the wealth.
He did not see the struggle that had come before it.
He did not see the hungry children.
He did not see the long days at sea.
He saw only the reward and wanted it for himself.
That was his mistake.
The fisherman learned that true fortune was not simply having magical objects.
It was having enough to provide for his family, knowing when to show restraint and understanding that greed could turn a blessing into a source of trouble.
And the neighbour learned the opposite lesson.
What he tried to steal brought him nothing but shame.
In the end, the fisherman remained with everything that had been given to him, while the neighbour was left with the consequences of his own greed.
The sea had given the fisherman three gifts.
But the greatest gift was the lesson he carried home.
Good fortune should be received with gratitude, protected with wisdom and never destroyed by greed.
